Planning back in Project Server 2010 Service Pack 1

Hello

The task is planned 25.01.2013 in Project Server 2010 Service Pack 1 start date 01.07.2010 end date 20.12.2016.

In a corporate calendar 09.01.2013 is the first working day in 2013.

There are four opened periods for users:

(24.01.2013 - 30.01.2013)
 (17.01.2013 - 23.01.2013)
 (10.01.2013 - 16.01.2013)
 (03.01.2013 - 09.01.2013)

Timesheets are not send for approve.

The task appears in calendars of users only in the period (10.01.2013 - 16.01.2013).

Earlier appointed tasks (in 2012) are available for approving in period (03.01.2013 - 09.01.2013).

Why?

What it is possible to make, that it appeared in the period (03.01.2013 - 09.01.2013) and earlier?

actuals, not approved yet, not in cube

A resource submitted 9 hours to a task for day x and is not yet approved by the PM. Why is the cube not picking up task actuals if the task is not approved? Once approved and published, the cube shows the correct hours.

Is there a way we can show the hours on the Cube reports of hours entered by the resource even if its not approved yet?

There is no menu "Delete" in the list of PWA webs or I don't see it? Try on RTM version, did not pay attention on Beta at this point.

Departments in Project Server 2010

Hello,

I am probably doing something wrong here and I am hoping someone will point out.

I have a resource (say John Smith) that is assigned to Department X. I have a custom field (plain text) that is also assigned to Department X. I have an enterprise project that is assigned to Department X.

When I log in as John Smith and attempt to create a project via PWA, I see the enterprise project belonging to Department X. However, in the Project Information page (which is where I have added the custom field belonging to this department) which is set to display when creating a new project of this type, the custom field remains invisible.

Can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Anirudh

Task updates moving start date before the true start date adding 0 actual hours between false start date and true start date

$

We are using Project Server 2010, Windows 8 and SQL 2008 R2.

This is a bug and I need to find out if Microsoft has a fix for this bug. My support vendor validated that this is a bug and was able to reproduce this issue.

Below is what happens on tasks that are just starting. Our process is the planned work is assigned, the resources submit time on Friday, and the Status Manager accepts the task updates on Monday and moves the work forward.

The bug is: If a resource submits time late and the Project Manager already moved the work forward, the start date of the task moves to an earlier date when the Project Manager accepts the task updates.

If you accepted a task update for a resource that had not yet had an actual start date and was reporting actual hours before the estimated start date, the start date moves a couple of months earlier than the true start date when accepting the task update

Here are a couple of scenarios:

Start date of a task is 12/31/2012

Status Manager moves work forward for one resource so the resource assignment start date is 1/7/2013

Resources submitted time late between 12/31 and 1/4/13 Status Manager previews the task updates and the start date is changed to 12/18/2012 Status Manager does not accept the task updates.

Status Manager opens the Project Schedule and adds planned work starting 12/31 - saves the plan Status Manager previews the task updates and the start date is 12/31 / status manager accepts the task updates

Second scenario different schedule:

The start was 8/27/12, accepted task updates and now it starts on 2/24/12 with all leading zero’s up to the 2/24/12 start date.

This scenario had the work moved forward for the resource and the resource submitted time late

And there are no predecessors or successors on the task.

Assignment not updated after project published - Project Server 2010

Hello everybody,

I have an issue with the update of assignments for many projects.

We have to make some corrections on projects (unactivate tasks). For that, each project was open with Project Pro, the tasks have been unactivated which generate some schedule changes (what was expected). Then the project was saved and published (all tasks have a 'published' status to YES).

And Projects and Users and automatic approval+publish turned on.

The status and the date in the PWA view shows 'published' and 'daydate' which was ok. We did not control every projects and assignments as it seemed to be ok.

But my customers called us and it appears that all the assignments touched by the changes in the projects are not updated.

I saw this proposal http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/projectserver2010general/thread/dace0f66-ce25-406a-b3ea-db26845ea9e7 from Brian Smith.

I tried it, it works. But it is much too heavy to do for all the project (150).

In this post, Brian said "Certainly just changing the Default Assignment Owener will not update any existing tasks or assignments",is it true for all updates for a project ? I mean what are the changes that are "allowed" to update assignments ? I thought a schedule change was enough, but it seems it is not the case.

Many thanks in advance for your advice and help.

Best regards

Anne Renaud

Project Server 2010 Fails when using a custom template.

I have a brand new clean installation of Project Server 2010 with SP1 and all the Cummulative updates.

Anytime I try to create a project (basic, sample, or custom) the only template I can use successfully is the default Microsoft project site.  From the PWA site, I created a new site, cutomized it, and then saved it as a template.  Anytime I try to use that template, I get the following error.  I have seen several post with this same problem but no solutions.

Rescheduling on a task on a "backward" Project - Project Server 2010

$

Hi everybody,

We have strange behaviour with an 'auto' rescheduling on tasks.

The project is scheduling 'backward', from the finish date and the tasks are 'late as possible'.  The end of the project is on 30.06.13

The activities on the project have begun and ressources started to fill the time up. We don't use the timesheet part of Project server. The State Date (not sure of the translation) of the project is on 28.01.13.

The situation :

Task A : start 04.03.13  End 06.03.13  as late as possible

Task B : start 24.12.12  End 24.12.12  as late as possible

Task C : start 07.03.13 End 08.03.13  as late as possible / task A is predecessor of task C

The ressource completed Task B and Task C at 100%. It means the Task C ended earlier than scheduled.

The problem is that now the Task A get : Start 26.06.13  End 28.06.13

We don't understand why there is reschedule, automatically. In a 'standard' Project, scheduling from Start date, there is no automatic reschedule. The Task A is late, and we can see it and the resource in charge too. But we don't want this task on June ! March is the right term.

Can you explain why there is a reschedule ? and how to avoid it ?

Many thanks in advance, best regards

Anne

Project Server 2010 + Formula (Graphical Indicator)

$

Hi,

I am very new to Project Server 2010 and I am asked to create a Graphical Indicators at the Project and Task level where I am wanting to show the indicators based on the formula output... But for some reason I am having tough time getting this done hence I would like to seek some clarity on the following queries to make my understanding stronger.

1) I am using the following formula to get the project health using the "Finish Variance" field and I am able to see that the formula is working file in "Project Center" but formula is only working when specific updated project plan is published through project professional (no effect if I am publishing the project plan through project server), I would like to understand if this is by design or am I doing something wrong here ? Is it that the formula calculation is only performed at the Project Professional level and not at the project server level hence to re-calculate the formula I will have to always publish the project through Project Professional ? I have heard that there are few improvements with this respect in Project Server 2013.

Switch([% Complete]=100,"Complete",(([% Complete]<100) And ([Finish]<Date())),"Overdue",[Finish Variance]<=0,"All Tasks are On Track and On Time",[Finish Variance]<=(ProjDateDiff([Project Start],[Project Finish])*0.1),"There are task(s) in jeopardy",[Finish Variance]>(ProjDateDiff([Project Start],[Project Finish])*0.1),"There are task(s) that are overdue")

2) It is said that once I modify the formula then I should re-publish all the projects, Is this by design ? Is there any workaround to this because publishing the projects could lead to re-sending the notification emails to everyone...

Thanks in Advance

Collapse/Expand resource usage view in Project 2010

$

In MSP Server 2007 when displaying the resource usage view, I could collapse/expand the view to see the tasks specific to a resource using either the [-], [+] or the collape/expnde icon on the menu bar.  This was extremently convienient on projects with a large number of resources and assignments.

Is there a comparable capabilty in 2010?  The resource usage view doesn't show the [-] or [+] next to the resource names and I can't find a collapse/expand command to add to the quick access/ribbon.

Thanks in advance.

Why does Project Server 2010 alter current and past actual work after altering remaining work for a task with multiple resources?  I have the 'Only allow task updates via Tasks and Timesheets' under 'Task Settings and Display' in PWA set.

Hi,

  1. Why don't we have a Project Owners' dimension in the Assignment Time-phased/Non-time-phased cube?
  2. The Baseline work in the MS-Project Plan does not match with the one in the Assignment Time-phased/ Non-Time-phased cube.

Can anyone help me out in finding Project Server 2010 Issues, Risks and Custom List information Storage location.

I have logged Issues and Risks against a project, they are not showing in standard Excel Services reports templates for issues and risks. I have tried to view MSP_WssRisk_OlapView , MSP_WssIssue_OlapView but no data is visible from these views. Similary [MSP_WssRisk] and [MSP_WssIssue] in Reporting database for project server shows '0' records.

Hi, i want to ask how to Move task table to right hand side of gantt chart?

Usually the task tables are located at the left hand side and gantt chart located on right hand side. ANd the same for printing.

However, i want to have another table on right hand side of gantt chart. I want to have 3 task table on left hand side, the gantt chart in middle and 1 task table on the right hand side. Please teach me how.

I tried to insert a table manually from excel but the rows never align correctly with my tasks. No matter how i align it on the screen, after printing, its just totally out of alignment.

Timesheet entry issues - Task Start and end Dates

$

Hi,

I have a question that I would appreciate some assistance with please.

I am using  MS Project Professional 2010 SP1 and corresponding PWA.

I am managing Timesheets on behalf of a team of developers. It is in single-entry mode.

What I have found is that, if the system allows users to add time to tasks beyond the task end date. This then plays havoc with the project plan as some users are not careful to ensure that they check the task start and end dates when they enter timesheets.

To compound the problem, sometimes the task start and end dates on the users' timesheets move and so no longer correspond to the task start and end dates in the Project plan.

Could anyone please explain for me whether there is any way of stopping users from entering time beyond the end date of the task, or restricting this so that I as the administrator/project planner needs to change the end date (to make it later) before they can enter time on the task beyond the stipulated end date?

Is there any reason why sometimes the task start and end dates on the timesheets no longer correspond to the start and end dates of the task in the Project plan?

Many thanks in advance

David

Actual Work captured on timesheet displays differently to Actual Work in MSP

$

We are using Project Server 2010 with Service Pack 1 and August 2011 CU. Timesheets are Single Entry Mode and “Only allow task updates via Tasks and Timesheets” is enabled.

Scenario: Using the PWA Timesheet view, a team member submits 3.5 hours of actual work against a task. The timesheet line is approved by the schedule owner and line manager using the PWA Approval Center.

Using the reporting database, the [MSP_TimesheetActual] table correctly displays 3.5h in the ActualWorkBillable field.

All is well.

The Project Manager then opens the MSP client and views the actual work captured for the task. MSP displays3.48h instead of the 3.5h that was captured on the timesheet.

Why does MSP display the Actual Work as a different decimal fraction instead of the original 3.5h captured on the timesheet?

This behaviour is pervasive across the schedule regardless of the task types (fixed units or fixed duration). It affects multiple resources across different tasks on the schedule. The task mode for all tasks is set to Auto Scheduled. There are no errors on the Project Server queue.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
